On behalf of OELMEK, I should first of all congratulate the authors of the book "Education in a Multicultural Cyprus" and emphasize that it is a remarkable version which, I am sure, took a lot of trouble and time.

The descent of many European citizens but also of citizens from third countries, especially after 2004, has made Cyprus a multicultural country.  Although in the early years Cypriot citizens were skeptical about the descent of thousands of foreigners with different cultures, progressively began accepting them without, of course, completely eliminating the concerns of a large number of Cypriot citizens, mainly because of the small size of our homeland and the problems they face.

The educational system in Cyprus has to play an important role in the acceptance of different cultures to be found on the island.  The schools curriculum program and the Schools' regulations require the development of a culture of acceptance and respect for non-Cypriot citizens who are in our country. Our colleaques at secondary schools, make a lot of efforts in schools and especially in classrooms to send the message to the children of acceptance, mutual respect and equality of people with a view to creating a society dominated by mutual respect.

On the other hand, the state itself must inform foreign citizens who wish to work or live in Cyprus about the history and culture, the Cyprus national problem and the sensitivities of Cypriot citizens so that we all together can live in a country with mutual respect without further problems.

Regarding the curricula that will be implemented in schools in a Federal Republic of Cyprus, one should respect the history and culture of the other, and away from extremes, everyone should try for the common good of our island.

Finally, once again, I congratulate the authors of this book as well as the organizers of its presentation.
